Toyota announces biggest vehicle launch in two decades with the release of its 2016 Toyota Mirai

Toyota has officially announced a date for the sale of the all-new Toyota Mirai, a 20-year-in-the-making fuel cell sedan vehicle that will become available to consumers in California on October 21, 2015.

The commercial release of the hydrogen powered vehicle represents a major step forward in Toyota's vision for the future, where they hope an ecosystem of fuel cell suppliers & hydrogen fueling stations will eventually become the norm. The eco-conscious automaker is aiming for 90% cuts in average vehicle CO2 emissions and 100% emission cuts from their factories by the year 2050.

What makes the Mirai the "green car" of the twenty-first century? As a zero-emissions vehicle, there are essentially no greenhouse gases coming out of it. Instead of using a gasoline tank or a large battery pack, the Mirai uses hydrogen and a fuel cell stack to make electricity on-board
; the vehicle's only tailpipe emission is basically water. It was also rated by the EPA as being the most fuel efficient hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) available today:

Toyota teams up with Doc Brown and Marty McFly to promote the all-new Mirai

With the upcoming on-sale date of Toyota's Mirai and the 30th anniversary of the 80's classic Back to the Future, the timing couldn't be more perfect for Toyota to partner with Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox to promote their futuristic hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

"Over the years we've had a lot of fun predicting which Back to the Future fictional 2015 technology would arrive by the real year," said Michael J. Fox. "Now that we're a week away, I think fans are going to have a good time with what Toyota sees as a true possibility for transportation. It's actually really cool."

"Mirai" means future in Japanese, and this basically represents what the fuel cell sedan is all about. Despite Toyota's plans to only sell about 3,000 Mirai's in the U.S. by the end of 2017, the vehicle represents Toyota's bet on the future to build out a hydrogen refueling instratructue, which will eventually lead to mass-market acceptance in perhaps a decade or so. Toyota hopes the Mirai is going to change the world in an even bigger way than the Prius did.
