Charles M. Hayes, president of the Grand Trunk Railway once said: “safety first” is “safety always.” There have been major developments in motor vehicle industry over the years when it comes to technology and auto parts that assists in preventing crashes and reducing the amount of damage in the event of a crash. The safety rating of a motor vehicle comes down to two elements: crash avoidance and crash protection.

Crash Avoidance

This measures the crash risk reduction. Technology to assist with crash avoidance includes Electric Stability Control (ESC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Crash Protection

This measures the damage reduction in the event of a crash. Crash protection includes things like Advanced Frontal Air Bags, Side Air Bags and Curtains, Advanced Head Restraints, Safety Belt Load Limiter, and Safety Belt Pre-tensioner.

Applying all of these technologies, motor vehicle companies have competed with each other to deliver the best and safest cars to consumers. The latest ranking, published on 27th September, 2013 declares 7 safest cars to be: Cadillac ATS, Cadillac SRX, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Mercedes C-Class, Volvo S60, Volvo XC60.

When it comes to the safety of your vehicle, it’s not about preference, it’s about necessity. You spend a lot of hours driving and you want to know that your vehicle is going to keep you safest, whether you’re zipping around the Toronto GTA in your car, or on those long stretches of highway around Barrie in your Hino truck. At Somerville, we stand by the safety of our vehicles, especially when it comes to our pre-owned inventory. These cars are tested to ensure they can stand up to your everyday driving needs.
